Basically after 2 years of reading and researching I finally pulled the trigger and purchased the following components. The goal was to replace an old XP desktop that I never got rid of, so the initial items I was considering were older components with much lower capability. Then Ryzen came out and the rest is history.
The build will be used mostly by my 8 yr old son, for school work and playing some older games (like SimCity 4). He helped with the build and asked lots of questions. As much as we would like to get the most bang for our buck or fret over every last FPS, it was a good father-son activity and as he gets older we can work on upgrades together ( or maybe he will do the upgrades himself?!?! ).
Ryzen 5 1600 and the ASRock AB350M were great deal from Microcenter. Setup was easy and there were no issues with posting. I was able to get an OC of 3.8ghz on the stock cooler without any heat issues. The mobo is a good budget board, 4 ram slots, 2 fan headers, 2 M.2 slots, front panel USB 3.0 headers.
EVGA 1050 TI 4gb SC Gaming was the most expensive component in my build, thank you mining craze! My initial plans were to use a GPU with a bit more gaming performance, RX480/580/GTX 1060, however budget really drove what I could have purchased. I saw this card on Amazon and decided to order. We don't have any AAA games to push this card but benchmarks seem to be fine and it runs cool and quiet. I have not had chance to try any overclock.
The Adata SU800 M.2 was hassle free for Windows installation and works great. My work PC has an SSD so I knew what to expect performance wise and I am not disappointed. My only decision was really form factor and price. In the end I chose the M.2 to try something new. I just wish i had purchased a larger drive, but that's what upgrades are for right?. The 1tb WD blue is set up as the main data storage. I had no issues in setting up the dual drives, thank you PCpartpicker forums and Youtube.
Very early in my research I fell in love with the look of the Cooler Master N200. The various ways to setup cooling options, support for a 240mm radiator, and the sleek look were the main factors. I am currently using the included fans and have had no heat issues. I have no real complaints, however the front fan is audible more so than the rear fan. Nothing major but in a quiet room you can here it. Another future improvement option. Cable management was not terrible but does require you to have a plan based on your cables. As this was my first time building a PC, I felt that I spent a lot of time on this step but I am happy with the result.
Seasonic EVO 620 PSU is fully modular, decent rating from a solid manufacturer, and more than enough power for this build. I went full modular mostly because I was worried about cable management, in retrospective I could have made a semi-modular work. I chalk this up to a good learning experience for the next time.
Rounding out the build is a basic 1080p monitor, the Asus VE228H. While back I needed to replace an old second monitor I use at my work desk, picked this one up and have been happy with it. So went with another for the build. Placement of the PC dictated a wireless connection, Rosewill N900PCE is a decent card and reasonable price. Set up was a breeze and I have had no issues with connectivity. Lastly went with a single 8gb stick of no frills DDR4-2400 RAM, I know Ryzen likes higher speed, dual channel, etc etc.....but honestly that performance bump was beyond the scope of the build.
NOTE: All the prices are what I paid for the items. I purchased everything on Amazon except for CPU, Mobo, RAM and PSU. The only item not listed is Windows 10, I owned a license previously.
Incredible performance for the price, 6 cores x 12 threads. This should handle anything I can throw at it for several years. Easy to overclock and keep cool.
Decent budget Mobo, had all the features I needed and then some. 2 chasis fan headers, 4 RAM slots, 2 M.2 slots. Bios is easy to use and configurable. This mobo paired very well to my CPU.
Low profile memory and it works.
Easy to install and fast enough. Installed Win10 with no issues. My only regret is not buying a larger capacity.
Good price and cannot go wrong with WD. I use this as a storage drive in my build.
Very impressed with this little card and it runs on the power from the PCI-E slot. Card is short, just under 6 inches, so if space or airflow is a concern this card should be considered.
Clean, elegant design with lots of cooling options. Case came with 2 x 120mm fans pre installed. Cable management was not too bad and there is room for up to 5 fans, front panel is mesh and can support up to 240mm fans. The included PSU dust filter is a bonus.
Fully modular PSU with plenty of power for my build.
Wireless Network Adapter
Great little wifi card, installation in windows was a snap. 3 movable antenna are a nice feature. No connectivity issues.
Decent budget monitor, offers DVI-D and HDMI connections and has some built in speakers. I previously picked one up to replace an old monitor at my workstation and was happy with it. Image is clear, crisp for both gaming and desktop use. The only con would be the built in speakers are no the best.
