Description

Hello ladies and gents...

Back in 2009 I purchased a Dell XPS 430. It was a good PC for my needs, for the time. When a video card would get past its' prime, I would just buy a new one......the last one I bought a couple a few years ago, was the PNY 560ti OC.

Well, fast forward to January, 2014, and I started to notice that, that video card seemed to look like it was about to give up the ghost. So, I knew this time around, I wouldn't be able to upgrade to a good video and psu again, because I would be bottle necked, by the CPU in the Dell.....which brings my to my FIRST ever build..... The Onyx Queen,

At the end of January, I began with haste to do as much research as I could, in understanding the processes of building a PC, as well as making sure I did all the necessary research, on purchasing the parts I desired. I set my budget at $1600, and I set to task. However, because of my career and school schedule, I could only work on building The Onyx Queen in the evening. And now since she is complete, I feel that my build is worthy enough to be shared, with you all, my fellow peers. :)

What do you use the machine for? I use it 90%ish for gaming. From Skyrim, D3 Reaper of Souls, Bioshock Infinite, Need For Speed's racing franchise and more, any thing I throw at the EVGA 770 Classfied, it just laughs, and doesn't break a sweat.

What worked well? Well, almost everything.....except for one part..........

Any problems? ....Well, yes, it's about that one part, actually two parts. When the Corsair 750D case arrived, the box looked great. However, when I took the case out of the shipping box, the front panel that conceals the front fans, had a broken left clip on it....and the entire front of the case itself was defective, because it had a busted piece, where the clip from the front panel needs to snap into place.

It took over two weeks to have the replacement parts sent, because they were BOTH on back order! :( So even though I had already completed the build, I still couldn't officially consider it completed, because I had to wait on those two parts. It seems to be a common problem, because a lot of other people have ran into the same issue. The case itself is simply amazing to look at. It is extremely well made, has an air of class to it, and I'm glad to have it.

I really, REALLY enjoyed building The Onyx Queen, and I hope you all leave comments, and I really hope you all enjoy the pics!:)

Also of note, if you really need a set of extremely good quality speakers, do yourself, and your ears a favor......... get the Audioengine A2s! The sound coming from these tiny speakers is unreal...from the highs, mids, and even some of the lows.....the sound is really just that good.:) No, they don't have earth shattering bass, but, the bass they do put out, makes you think there has to be a sub woofer somewhere! lol

Also of special note......

As I was doing all the research to build my first PC correctly, I by chance, happened to come across this PC build video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea_bs5G1yYU&list=FLE8j6XBjz1blRwGH_AL1vnA&index=11

This video REALLY helped me throughout the entire process...........not to mention, I watched it like dozen times, weeks before I began my build. :)

Part Reviews

Storage

I use this for a few games that would otherwise have nauseating load times on a HDD. Speeds are good. Also I did want to add the RGB lighting, as my theme is Black and Red. THIS is great for that. The red lighting is VERY red. +1

Hi Retroman, and thanks!

I really took my time in researching all I could on quality parts for the build, while at the same time, doing the best I could, to stay within my set budget. Overall, I did well! :)

Hi Catalyzer, and thank you!

I'm happy about the performance on The Onyx Queen!:) Eventually, I would like to run in SLI, with another EVAGA 770 Classfied in a few months. But for now, I'm just enjoying the setup as is.:)

Oh great ! 770 is an amazing card. SLI would be a total overkill for current gen games. I just built my new PC a couple of days back , i have put R9 270x. I'm writing the description and other related stuff for my new PC for PCP Community , mostly i'll post it this week. I ran crysis 3 on Very high , and that card really handles it , with manageable Frame rates.

Hiya Catalyzer.

Yeah it is definitely overkill for current gen games, going SLI with two of these now....but there will be a time, when it will be time! lol

Are the A2's really that good? I have been lusting for some good quality speakers myself. Also been looking at Harman Kardon's soundsticks III, do you think the A2's are worth the extra 30euros im gonna spend on them?

Great build, +1 from me.

Hello hollingc, and thanks for the reply!

Yes, the A2s are amazing......they could have sold these for $300, and STILL would have represented a great investment!

Hello dim23, and thanks!!

Well, I've had the A2s for over a year now, and YES, these are definitely worth the extra 30euros. I also have a my sound card's bass setting on them at 50%............these pump out a nice amount of bass, but for me, having it set at 50%, is just a nice mellow blend.:)

Also, the vocals are very clear, and stand out. The highs are very detailed on these A2's........yes, they are that good. And once again, not earth shattering bass, but for what bass they do pump out, it really does seem like there is a sub woofer somewhere.

Also, go to Audioengines website, if you haven't already. The list of both professional AND consumer reviews, just goes on and on, raving about them. Definitely better than the Harmon Kardon soundsticks III, imo.

great, thanks a lot for the info. I have wanted to invest in some higher quality audio for some time now, but the audio market is like a jungle for me. Your setup makes me green with envy to be honest, it is...marvelous.

Really good.... I tried to set my own budget cost to 1000 dollar. But because it was so intense that I didn't know about.... It was 11000 dollars....

Hi internal, and thanks!

Yes, I KNOW what you mean! lol! There were other parts that really took my fancy. However, that would've skyrocketed my budget to $2000, and I was not having that! lol
