Description

This was my first build, I target 1080p/60hz performance and wanted a red and black build. Many of my hardware choices were affected by the colour scheme.

I have the processor running on a - 0.0875v offset with LLC set to 7. Keeps my temperatures down allowing it to boost its all core frequency higher than at stock settings. I have the memory overclocked to 3200 MHz CL 16-18-18-18-36 @1.45v with memory latency of around 65ns depending on the run. The motherboard has decent overclocking options, not the best but good enough for someone starting out (like myself). The case is easy to build in, plenty of places to pass through cables and ample tie down spots. I have the graphics card overclocked with +115Mhz on the clock and +995 on the memory clock. Under load the card hits 63C and maintains a clock between 2085-2100Mhz. In The Division 2 (DX 11) I get FPS between 60-80, World War Z ranges between 100-144 depending on whats going on in game. Far Cry 5 I get between 60-80FPS. My graphics settings are a mix of High and Ultra.

Overall I'm really happy with the performance if this system. I had made some mistakes with this build initially. Mainly I gave up a tier of performance in exchange for RGB. Much to my dismay RGB does not increase performance. Not a mistake I will make again. Ive updated this description to reflect my experiences with this system. Hope it helps someone deciding on what to build for themselves.

Part Reviews

CPU

Having used this part for a couple months now I can honestly say that I am extremely happy with it. Ive been able to get a 4.15GHz all core boost out of it that's stable. I've gotten it to 4.2GHz but the amount of voltage required even with an offset makes me uncomfortable, so I backed it down. I mostly game at 1080P and it really flex's it's muscle.

CPU Cooler

Edit: February 24, 2020. Switched to a 280mm CLC for a bit and ended up switching back because there really weren't any temperature differences. This cooler is really good and the Bionix fan is really quiet, I hear my gpu/case fans even if it's at full tilt. End.

Use it with my R5 2600x with PBO enabled and it does a really good job. I have an aggressive fan curve on the CPU fan because frequency with Ryzen 2000 is really temperature dependent. Keeps everything in optimal temps.

Motherboard

Edit: February 24, 2020 I've spent some time overclocking my RAM and CPU with this board and my one gripe is the voltages I set are ignored by the BIOS. I actually have to set my voltages lower then I want because the board pushes through more voltage, regardless of LLC or anything else I try and do. An example would be running my ram at 1.43v in order to get 1.45 that I want. If I run 1.45 it goes up to 1.46. I'll say that VRMs never go about 60c and they have no direct airflow. I suppose for the price I shouldn't complain to much.

It's a good board, although I didn't have a choice because I wanted my black and red build. I did have some trouble with PBO being borked by AMD in a bios update and I had to use a special utility to flash back to an earlier bios because AMD decided to block flashing back to bios' before 1.70(?). Anyways it's served me well and any complaints I do have are AMD's fault. Mystic Light works fine, all my RGB gear syncs well.

Storage

Speeds are as advertised, boots up quick, loads my games fast.

Storage

It is a backup mechanical drive. It stores my stuff. She's a bit loud when she spins up though. Been spoiled by SSD's I guess.

Video Card

Edit: February 24, 2020 Overclocked the snot out of this card. Still going strong. I do hear the fans at first when they begin spinning up under load but they quiet down once running.

Really happy with this card. 1080P beast. I never hear the fans, even when gaming and it's under a high load. Would buy again.

Case

Edit: February 24, 2020 I know this case is done but I just have to say how much I love it. I've rebuilt my computer a few times trying different coolers with it and even switched to a different case for abit. The cable management on the backside is great. And the Negative pressure set up really does work well. When I game for a few hours the case temp gets up to 43C that's with my overclocked 1660 and 2600x dumping their heat into the case. End.

I love the look of this case, its elegant and the vent panel on the side brings in enough air to keep my stuff running cool.

Power Supply

Edit: February 24, 2020 Still no issues with this PSU. Have overclocked my CPU and graphics card haven't had any issues. Never hear it.

Great power supply, I did add cable extensions but other than that, no issues powering my system.

Case Fan

These fans are okay for the price. A bit loud at full speed so I have them locked at lower RPM. They don't have the greatest static pressure but considering the price for 5, I'm not gonna bash them too hard. The RGB looks good, works well with my motherboards software.

Keyboard

I've been using this keyboard for almost a year now. It's my first mechanical keyboard. I use it for school and it's comfortable for my hands. Would buy again.

Mouse

Really happy with this mouse, I can game for hours with it and it's very comfortable. The mouse buttons have good tactile feel and are spaced well for my hand. Would buy again.

Thanks, the whole thing turned out better than I thought it would. Those cablemod cables really do make it so much better.

Wow, I'm in the process of putting together my own red and black build and this is exactly what i had in mind for mine, I think I'm going to be stealing the majority of this part list for my personal build. Looks awesome man!

Thanks a lot! There's just something about red and black. I love looking over at my computer while gaming/working. Since I posted this I've refined a lot of settings and have it running beautifully.

Did you need extra fans for the case?

I put 4 fans in the case, 2 exhaust and 2 intake. I know that some test have shown that Negative air pressure helps the GPU temps but I wanted to ensure that the processor got cool air because of Ryzen's boost behaviour. Considering that the GPU is a triple fan 1660 I didn't notice any performance issues. Honestly the 2 included fans in exhaust positioning should work fine, I would remove the filter from the top mounted fan though.

TLDR;

No, but yes.

The RGB Fusion software allows you to set any colour statically. I had it set to red.
