BoyScout April 25, 2017

Update The stream is over. Thanks to everyone who joined us! If you missed the stream live, you can watch the archive on Twitch and we'll upload a summary archive on YouTube next week.

We have one more small form factor (SFF) gaming PC left to build ahead of our trip to DreamHack's BYOC LAN party.

This time we'll use an i7-7700K and a GTX 1080 Ti with MSI's Z270I Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard all squeezed inside the new BitFenix Portal. Join us on Twitch.tv this Thursday, April 27th at 2PM CDT to see it come together!

If you can't watch live, check back and we'll update this post with a link to the archive on Twitch (same day) and YouTube (the following week).

A special thanks to BitFenix for providing the case and MSI for providing the motherboard for this build.

I thought its a portal gun

Wolfemane 4 Builds 2 points 1 month ago

moving my wife's computer into one of these with the window.

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 4 points 1 month ago

This one has the window up top as well.. it's really quite nice. The case has not disappointed us so far.

Wolfemane 4 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

That's good to hear. I've been contemplating fitting a 2x120 rad in the 120mm place with tubing at the bottom running where the HDD bays go. Haven't gotten ours in yet, will see when it finally arrives. If there's about 280mm of usable height there at the front... I think it will work.

bmccarthy8989 7 Builds 2 points 1 month ago

Where are you guys going to be sitting?

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 6 points 1 month ago

My understanding is the only safe place to sit relative to a Portal Turret is behind it..

Oh, you mean at Dreamhack Austin? We're actually trying to figure that out for certain. We thought were near an entrance to the BYOC area, but that may not be the case. We'll try to post an update with where to find us in case anyone wants to meet up.

bmccarthy8989 7 Builds 1 point 29 days ago

Awesome sounds great. I thought I saw you guys at Quakecon last year, but didn't want to make an idiot out of myself. Looking forward to seeing that case in person. I'll be bringing my white widower build that took first at Quakecon.

ThoughtA staff 1 point 29 days ago

Manirelli and I were there last year. Feel free to say hi next time!

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 29 days ago

Nice rig! And definitely feel free to come up to say howdy!

bmccarthy8989 7 Builds 1 point 27 days ago

Did you guys figure out where you are sitting yet?

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 27 days ago

Sure -- we are near the north wall of the north east section of the BYOC area. That probably doesn't narrow it down very well though.. The easiest thing to do might be to message one of us on Discord and see who is around when you have time to stop by.

Jaime.g 2 points 1 month ago

Hm. continuous live stream builds... Interesting!!!

eagerigor 2 points 26 days ago

anyone notice that techsource posted an almost identical pc 1 day after this was uploaded?

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 4 points 25 days ago

Manufacturers (such as BitFenix in this case) provide new products at or near their launch to many outlets to help promote that new product with reviews and build videos, so that's why the case would show up a fair amount right now.

We planned our build weeks in advance, as I'm sure others did in order to get the complete part list together in time to film. We also did 4 ITX builds over the past month getting ready for DreamHack. In the world of mITX, you are often selecting from more limited options compared to mATX and ATX, so you're likely to see some reasonable amount of overlap in part selection (especially if you are trying to match a particular aesthetic).

eagerigor 1 point 22 days ago

what im saying is that the parts techsource used are almost identical to the ones you used not just the case but idk

uglymonkey913 1 point 1 month ago

Great parts list. I'm liking it.

videonery 1 point 1 month ago

this is going to be awesome. i also love the effort you guys are putting to push out these streams and build. keep up the good work!

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks -- hope you enjoy it!

Chillsabre 2 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

How does the MP500 compares to other brands like the 950 or the MX300?

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 27 days ago

The MP500 is an NVME drive, so it can perform quite a bit faster than SATA based SSDs.

viper_12358 1 point 29 days ago

Anybody have the Twitch link for the recorded videos of this build? I missed it :(

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 28 days ago

It hasn't happened yet.. still 1.5 hours away. But we will definitely update the post with links to the archive once they are available for folks who aren't able to watch live.

ImperiousBattlestar 1 point 29 days ago

Great to see all of these live builds coming thick and fast. It's a shame I'm too lazy to watch any of them. :(

Namnguyen 1 point 29 days ago

Finally, a 1080 ti build. Ive been waiting for this!

LatamirDigital 3 Builds 1 point 29 days ago

I just saw a techsource timelaspe build with near the exact specs on Nice XD.

furioe 1 point 26 days ago

ive wondering for a while why the name is boyscout

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 3 points 25 days ago

I like to be prepared.

dominorider2431 2 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

This seems a lot like TechSource's build.... #PORTAL

But I like it a lot!

P.S. For future, could you guys possibly make timelapses? Just Wondering!

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 23 days ago

As noted elsewhere in the thread, it's a new case that you'll likely see in a lot of content from different people. For the other parts, we ordered those weeks ahead of the stream, as I'm sure TechSource did ahead of their video, so any overlap is coincidental on both parties.

The only time lapses we do at this time are for our cable management videos. For our main build videos, our goal is to treat it more like a tutorial to help builders (both new and seasoned) see the components up close and how they are put together. Thanks for the feedback!

dominorider2431 2 Builds 1 point 21 days ago

Thanks for the detailed comment! I figured out that playing the video at 2x speed on youtube, muting the volume on that tab, then playing dubstep in another! DIY timelapse.

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 21 days ago

Nice. Maybe that should be a built-in option on YouTube. :)

felohany 1 point 20 days ago

is there a completed build page for this one?

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 2 points 20 days ago

It's in the works. We built this the afternoon before Dreamhack and just haven't had a chance to get it setup for photos and run the rest of the benchmarks since we got back. (Dreamhack takes it's toll!) We'll get it up soon and I'll update the post above.

scotty35503 1 point 19 days ago

How is the Gigabyte card? I don't see any user reviews so I'm curious.

BoyScout staff submitter 9 Builds 1 point 17 days ago

Performance when we used it at Dreamhack was great. We're a bit behind on doing so, but we'll post some benchmarks with a completed build soon.

Soulzaroth 1 point 16 days ago

You know this chassis is inspired by the Portal series because 1. it's named portal and 2. it looks like a sentry turret from Portal.

godzilla5123 1 point 11 days ago

This is a lie, just like the cake

NYPOP 1 point 4 days ago

Would love to use a nice OC RGB GPU for my next build - especially with that windows. But, wouldn't that cook the insides? Wouldn't a blower be preferable? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on how noisy an blower style GTX 1080 would be in this case?

Mossrize_Tech -5 points 1 month ago

this is pretty much a copy of techsources upcoming build!

philip staff 10 Builds 3 points 25 days ago

If you mean copied as in planned-independently-weeks-ago-and-coordinated-with-manufacturers-for-new-release-hardware then sure!

dominorider2431 2 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

That class...

philip staff 10 Builds 3 points 24 days ago

Care to expand on your comment?

dominorider2431 2 Builds 1 point 23 days ago

Oh, just a classy response to the comment claiming it was a copy.
