Shield pin/wire for G502?

I'm doing some research for a mod on my G502 and had a question about the fifth pin on the cable connector. I know 4 of them are 5v, data +, data -, and ground. Then there is a 5th one that is designated shield. What does this do, or more importantly is it required? Long story short I'm using a cable that will be stripped to be soldered to the pins or utilize the connector on the OEM cable but does not appear to have a "shield" wire as far as I'm aware. Any help will be appreciated!
