That's super helpful information - thanks! I'm willing to bet there's a bug with the plotting library we're using (that's using browser canvas support) and your hardware and/or version of Chrome. I'll look into whether there's an update to the library - hopefully this has been reported elsewhere and maybe we can pick up a fix for free.

philip staff 10 Builds 3 points 23 days ago

Yep, we're taking care of it.

Spam isn't something you "fix". You can put things into place to mitigate it, but in the end nothing will stop someone who wants to spam manually or semi-manually. We have various defenses if you'd like to call it that. Sometimes people find gaps in those (and there are plenty), and we patch up those holes until the next round. No amount of preventive coding will block 100% of spam. Some of it is super subtle. Some spammers are pretty creative and clever.

Ultimately you have to make it inconvenient or unsuccessful enough to post spam that they give up and go somewhere else.

Forum Topic "Do GPUs have an open circuit on a single capacitor?"

philip staff 10 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

Continuity is not a proper test of a capacitor. It applies a small current, which has the effect of charging the capacitor. At first when it is charging the multimeter will interpret that as a short. But as the capacitor charges up more, the current draw will decrease, gradually making the multimeter think it is open. In a nutshell, continuity is not going to give you meaningful info.

This is definitely on our roadmap. To do it though requires some rework of how we model components. It sounds trivial at first given we support SLI/CrossFire setups, but when you get down to all the details it's a LOT more work (to do it right). We are going to get there, but it's going to be a bit before we can get to it.

Regardless of my personal stance, posing a question saying, "Personally, I'm completely against this notion and I think it's completely and totally illogical and ignorant." and then ending with "What do y'all think. Should we ban the AR-15? If so, why?", makes it clear you're not really asking to ask, but just posing a question trying to prove your point. If you'd like honest discussion, you're not going to get it like that. Don't pose questions like this. It's not sincere at best, inflammatory at worst.

No difference in culture? Between those it should be really significant. To me, how the local people interact among themselves, with me, and often the difference between those is the best part. There's usually a good historical or cultural background to explain why things are the way they are. Every person has a story; almost all are fascinating if you can dig deep enough.

Forum Topic "CJ Dotomi Issue"

philip staff 10 Builds 8 points 1 month ago

Long story short, it's ok. But I can appreciate your caution and your concern.

We use affiliate links to various retailers so that when you purchase something via PCPartPicker, we receive a small commission to support the site and our staff. There are various affiliate networks, and each uses a different strategy to associate purchases to a referring site.

Newegg is supported on the Commission Junction network. They're a large affiliate network that also supports a number of other retailers we list. Commission Junction handles the affiliate tracking via redirecting through a couple domains that are named in ways that do often cause concern. Androezrs is another domain name you'll often see. The one you listed is also part of their family. (As a hint, do a whois lookup on kqzyfj.com. It's protected by MarkMonitor, which is a level of protection you'll see from people like Facebook. i.e. it's not cheap, and it'd be shocking to see a spammer go to that length.)

In the affiliate world, there are lots of people who will go to extreme and shady lengths to steal commissions, stuff cookies, do pop unders for affiliate credit, you name it. They make a bad name for affiliate linking, and thus you'll see various plugins go to block those links. Those folks can give legitimate affiliate-oriented sites like ours problems, because people start to assume all affiliate sites are evil. Or that there are so many bad-actor sites out there that it's worth banning/blocking them all even if there are some good ones in the mix.

A similar question to yours came up recently, though it was for a different CJ redirect domain. You can find that response here: https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/271411-ensuring-you-guys-get-the-commission

Forum Topic "Opinions on parents paying for one’s college?"

philip staff 10 Builds 4 points 2 months ago

To me an interesting question is how much money to allocate to defense vs education. You can establish two polar opposites: 100% to defense, 0% to education. Or 100% to education, 0% to defense. Today we're somewhere in the middle.

For both sides, there's a point of diminishing returns. If you're spending $500B on defense, will $600B substantially protect the country better? Does the funding have a utility curve, where as you spend more you get progressively less benefit (or waste)? If so, then there's likely some point on the curve where it provides greater long-term value to the country to invest in education. One could argue that underfunding education hurts the welfare of the country in the long-term (likely in an economic sense). The same could be said in the reverse too, that underfunding defense potentially hurts the security of our country, both short and long-term.

How you balance out the risks and needs of both is, to me at least, the interesting part where the rubber meets the road. You can say that defense comes first, but at what threshold do you say, "Ok, we're good," and allocate funding to education? Everyone is going to have a bit different answer, and it's hard to nail down specifically. If there's $100B to spend, does all of it really need to go to defense? What about $99B/$1B split? What about $95B/$5B split? It's so easy for us to all talk past each other in a non-personal forum thread, because it takes a lot of time to really dive down in the nuances of each position and get at what people really believe. It's way less effort to just say, $X is better here than there and leave it at that. :)

I think your desire to serve is great. I was just trying to reconcile it when you said:

I always figured domestic issues like an individuals college education should be payed for by the individual.

I'm fully behind paid education following military service. But I guess what I'm after here is that it isn't a binary decision between supporting the military or supporting government subsidized education. In your situation, you're getting both (and that's good!)
